What is shimmer?
Today, shimmers are the main trend in the beauty industry; they contain a large number of small shiny and shimmering particles. They are divided into two groups:
- Products intended for strobing or sculpting, adding radiance to the skin of the face;
- Products used to create a unique manicure design.
In nail services, shimmer is a special varnish or shellac. It is characterized by the following properties:
- High density and thick consistency;
- Uniformity of texture;
- Quick drying;
- The presence of many tiny shiny particles.
The shimmer in the varnish provides a special play of light on the nails, a neat natural glow. It allows you to achieve a denser and more even nail coating, making your manicure glossy and shining.
Useful tips
- It is better to pick up large particles with tweezers.
- If you do not use a fixative or at least a transparent varnish, the glitter manicure will quickly fade, and the rough glitter will cling to your hair and clothes.
- When using glitter powder with a mirror or holographic effect, it is recommended to use a sponge. The nail plate with the varnish that has not yet dried is covered with glitter powder.
- For nail art using glitter sand, you need to use a small plastic spoon. By the way, this material is best combined with gel polish.
- It is best to get rid of excess shiny particles with a brush.
- The patterns are created like this: an ornament is drawn with a base varnish using a thin brush, and immediately sprinkled with glitter.
What is shimmer used for?
Shimmer manicure is considered one of the most popular today. It can be seen both in everyday life and in photos from leading fashion publications. This popularity is explained by the wide range of applications of this coating.
What is shimmer polish used for?
:
- Creating an even shimmering nail finish;
- Hiding minor flaws and irregularities of the nail plate;
- Creation of various color compositions in manicure;
- Creating a stylish and bright manicure design;
- Drawing shimmering patterns;
- Decoration of a classic French jacket.
Also, shimmer color can be used as an additional element of nail decor. It can be combined with gel pastes, giving voluminous manicure details shine and shine.
Gel polishes with shimmer are ideal for those whose nails are tired of constantly wearing shellac or extensions.
The varnish hides fine cracks that form on the plate well and evens out its surface. This allows you to get a perfect manicure without any unaesthetic defects or flaws (chips, peeling, etc.).
Dictionary of textures and effects
Home Dictionary of textures and effects
If you have ever wondered what shimmer or glitter is, how scattered holography differs from linear holography, then our dictionary is for you! We tried to collect here all the textures of varnishes (and everything that is often mistakenly called “textures”), and explain everything clearly and with examples. We have divided the dictionary into three parts:
- Textures are actually a characteristic of the Cream base varnish
- Jelly
- Metallic
- Holographic
- Sand
- Textured metallic
- Shimmer
- Neon
Textures
They can be either pure or with various inclusions, which you will read about in the next section.
Cream (cream varnish, enamel) is a dense and opaque varnish texture, which is achieved due to a high concentration of pigment (dye). Typically cream polishes require two coats for full coverage. There are also “single-layer” ones – those that provide a complete coating in just one layer.
Jelly is a translucent varnish texture. In one layer it does not cover the free edge of the nail, it becomes opaque in 2-4 layers. Due to its translucency, the coating acquires depth. The denser representatives of this texture are sometimes called “ crelly ” (cream + jelly), and the more transparent ones are called “ glass ”. “ Glass ” is different in that even when layered, the effect of transparency is preserved, the coating never becomes dense and impenetrable.

Metallic is a varnish consisting of tiny particles of shimmer. Due to the sparkling of these particles, the varnish acquires a uniform, as if “metallic”, sheen, due to which the texture received its name.
Holographic is a varnish containing a large number of holographic particles. There are several types of holography: linear, scattered and mixed.
Linear holography | Diffuse holography | Mixed holography |
Sand (sand varnish) is a varnish with a “relief” texture that creates the effect of a sand or sugar crust on the nails. Such varnishes consist of either special small silicone particles or glitter (small, large, or a mixture of different ones). The latter differ in that they are quite difficult to remove and may require a special peel-off base.
Sand varnishes have a rough surface and - most often - a matte finish.
Textured metallic (textured metallic, “crumpled foil”) is a special varnish texture that is currently only available in a few FNUG varnishes. Its peculiarity is that in application the varnishes do not differ from ordinary metallic ones, but, once on the nail, they begin to “bubble” and the surface becomes textured. At the same time, textured metallics, unlike sand varnishes, do not contain any special particles and are removed as easily as any regular varnishes.
"Supplements"
They can be found in varnishes of different textures. At high concentrations, when it is difficult to isolate the base of the varnish, varnishes are called: shimmer, glitter.
Shimmer is the smallest decorative particles, which are a powder made of mica or other minerals. Shimmer can be found in varnishes of any texture. It can be very fine (like dust) and give the effect of flickering, uniform shine and iridescence (without the ability to see individual particles), or it can be larger - in this case it is finely crushed mica, you can easily see individual particles. Shimmer can be added in small quantities, or it can be the main component of the varnish. Also, several types of shimmer can be mixed in varnishes.
Varnishes containing pearlescent shimmer are called mother-of-pearl or pearlescent varnishes.
Large shimmer is sometimes called glimmer (glitter+shimmer), meaning that the size of such a shimmer is more like glitter.

Mica is a material that is a decorative component of mineral cosmetics and nail polishes. Mica is a mineral with a layered structure that is easily crushed, crushed and painted in any color. In nail polishes it can be easily recognized by its appearance: torn particles of different sizes, both larger and transparent with a colored tint, and small and brightly colored. Mica in varnishes can be present independently in a transparent base, or it can be a component of a colored varnish.

Glitter is decorative particles made of artificial materials (polyethylene terephthalate film) with or without metallized coating. Glitter can be of different sizes, but even the smallest particles of glitter are still visible to the naked eye. In addition, the difference between glitter and shimmer is always obvious when removing nail polish: polishes with glitter are harder to remove, glitter particles stick to the surface of the nail. If the glitter content in the varnish is high, it is recommended to use a peel-off base.

Holographic crumbs are “torn” particles that give a holographic reflection. They can be of different sizes, but most often they are clearly visible to the naked eye. When they are present in high concentration, the varnish is commonly called diffuse holographic . And in small quantities they add a little mysterious shimmer to the varnish.
Effects
There are several characteristics of color or finish ("finish"), often called textures. But since these effects can occur in varnishes of different textures, we have separated them into a separate category.
Neon (neon varnishes) are very bright varnishes with a high content of neon pigment. The texture can be creamy or jelly. Most often they have a “rubber” finish, so for gloss it is recommended to cover them with a top coat.
Duochromes, multichromes are varnishes that change color depending on the viewing angle (the angle of incidence of light). Moreover, duochromes shimmer in two colors (most often they have a primary color and are cast in some other way), and multichromes can change color in a wide spectrum.

Mother of pearl - varnishes with pearlescent shimmer (which, by the way, can be obtained from shell rock), creating a “pearl” effect on the nails. You can also find pearlescent mica in varnishes, which shimmers in different colors due to special particles that reflect light.
Satin effect (satin finish, satin): in such varnishes the shine is not completely absent, but partially. The surface is semi-glossy, reminiscent of satin fabric, which gives the name to this effect.
Linear holography creates a “rainbow” effect on the nails, which moves depending on the angle of incidence of the light. The “stronger” the holography, the more pronounced the rainbow. For example, there are linear holographics that show the entire spectrum of colors in a “rainbow”, and there are those that have a shimmer in the same range: for example, blue-green. However, the line of the "rainbow" remains distinguishable at all times, hence the name "linear" holography.
The effect of diffuse holography is achieved by containing a large number of particles, each of which refracts light on its own. In such varnishes, holography “scatters” evenly over the nail.
Mixed holography is usually linear holographics containing additional holographic “flakes” that refract light on their own.
a matte effect (matte finish) initially, or can be achieved using a matte top. These varnishes have no shine. Shimmer varnishes with a matte finish are called “ suede ”: the shimmer gives such varnishes the heterogeneity of color that is characteristic of suede. Suede polishes are ideal for quick manicures: they dry quickly and do not require a top coat.
Magnetic varnishes are varnishes containing metallized particles, which, when exposed to a magnet on a fresh, just applied coating, are arranged into patterns, creating the effect of deep shimmering within the varnish itself.
Thermal varnishes are varnishes that contain special dyes that react to changes in temperature and change the color of the coating depending on it.
There are also photosensitive varnishes that change their hue when the sun’s rays hit the coating, and varnishes that “charge” from a light source and glow in the dark or ultraviolet .

How to use shimmer?
The use of varnishes containing shimmer does not require any professional skills or abilities. Any new nail technician or even an amateur can handle them. The coating is applied according to the same principle as standard gel polishes.
Step-by-step instructions on how to use shimmer:
- Treat the nail plate with a buff to eliminate all small chips and irregularities;
- Degrease the nail;
- Apply a special primer and wait a few seconds, allowing it to absorb;
- Apply the base coat to the nail in an even, thin layer, then bake it in a lamp;
- Apply the shimmer in two layers, baking each of them alternately in the lamp. It is noteworthy that it is the second layer of varnish that will provide the nails with additional shine and play of light.
- Finally, cover the nail plate with top coat and dry it in a lamp.
If you want to achieve more shine from the shimmer, do not rush to remove the sticky layer of top. Leave it on your nails for a couple of minutes and only then remove it with a degreaser.
Matte manicure with glitter
Shine, sequins, and glitter designs look brightest and most contrasting, of course, on a matte finish.
The glossy sparkle of the varnish itself does not distract from the shine of the glitter. This option is perfect for a holiday or gala evening. The base color of the varnish can be any. Light nude or pastel shades look best, as well as more saturated ones: blue, green, fuchsia, purple and even matte black. How to use gloss for a matte finish? Any of the above methods. These can be laid out single sequins and confetti, or maybe small glitter in the form of some kind of designs and ornaments. Again, it is worth showing restraint in the abundance of sparkle, since it is most visible on a matte base. The “smile” of a French manicure and the hole of a moon manicure look good on a matte nail, so it’s worth trying these options.
