Every woman has her own concept of a beautiful manicure: for some it’s long cat nails, others are delighted with short and colorless ones, and still others are in constant pursuit of trends and choose only the latest designs. Let's talk about one of these today. On the agenda is a manicure with rubbing of different types and colors.
What types of nail rubs are there: pigments
The design of a manicure with virka largely depends on what kind of powder is applied to the nail. There are three main types (pigments) that allow you to create radically different designs:
- mirror;
- holographic;
- pearl.
Mirror rubbing gives your nails a chrome effect. With chrome powder you can achieve the most daring and youthful manicure. Also, this particular look is popular among celebrities who often wear metal jewelry.
The most popular colors of mirror rubbing are blue, purple, gold and silver. The final effect depends on what color you choose and what shade of gel polish will be the base. For example, the most successful solution is to apply a black mirror rub onto varnish of the same shade.
Holographic rubbing
Holographic rubbing is a hit in 2022. It helps create a rainbow effect on your nails and shimmers playfully under any lighting. There are several types of holographic rubbing:
- chameleon;
- Chafer;
- cat's eye;
- diamond
They differ in effect. For example, a chameleon changes color depending on the angle of light, and the cockchafer naturally has a green-yellow effect.
Pearl rub
The most gentle rub for nails is pearl . It is often chosen by brides for a wedding manicure. It also goes perfectly with a French manicure or hole design. Pearl rub is usually applied to light gel polish: pink, white, milky, peach, ice rose, dusty lilac and other pastel shades. This is the perfect design idea for a holiday manicure, no matter the time of year.
A white manicure with a pearl rub can be for New Year’s, for prom, for a wedding, or for a party.
Correct fixation of the rub
As you noticed, there are a lot of subtleties in applying the rub. But there are also nuances with its fastening, since a very common problem is when the rubbing simply wears off at the ends while wearing the design. Here's what experts advise on this matter:
- If you see that the rubbing has been applied in a very thin layer, so that the colored gel polish is almost visible, then you can apply a second layer of rubbing on top of the top coat.
- It is not recommended to rub the pigment in with your finger without gloves, as this can leave sebum on the surface, which affects the wearability of the coating.
- Most often, problems with wear appear on the tips and ends of the nail. This can be prevented if you use a small life hack: after the rubbing has polymerized, cover it not with a top, but with a base, dry it and lightly buff the free edge. And only after that apply the final layer of top.
- If you have problems with the wear of the rub, try using a slider design finish instead of a regular top.
Why the rub may not rub in
Yes, this happens too. You may be surprised that during the application of the rub, it simply rolls off and only small single sparkles remain on the gel polish, and not at all the effect you expect. What could be the reason for this?
- Over-dried or under-dried material. Polymerize the top coat or gel polish on which you are rubbing in exactly the time required for your type of lamp. Typically this is 30 seconds for LED and hybrid and 2 minutes for ultraviolet.
- Cooled surface. The rub should be applied while the material is “warm”, that is, just from under the lamp. That is why the design is not performed on all nails at once, but one at a time.
- Using a top coat with a sticky layer. In order not to waste time removing stickiness and cooling the material, rub it over the top without dispersion and you will see how much better the result will be.
Rubbing on nails photo new for 2021
Last year, mirror rub was considered the most popular nail rub. Two years ago, every second woman chose pearl, and this year holographic and cat-eye pigment are the most popular new items of the season.
A manicure with this design is usually done as a simple, medium-length or short one. Since long nails with a cat's eye or holography look somewhat provocative. For them, a more complex combined design and delicate shades are still recommended.
Rubbing on short nails
The design of nails with rubbing, if they are short, can be anything, as everything looks appropriate. Today, fashionistas often choose a manicure with holes, geometric, or combined, when one or a pair of nails, according to Feng Shui, is a different shade from the rest.
Long nails with rubbing
Mirror rubbing on long nails looks somewhat vulgar. But pearl, applied in a non-pastel shade of gel polish or a current nude base - peach, camouflage, milky, ice, looks very gentle and stylish. Moreover, this design looks good on any shape of long nails: cat claws, ballerina, stiletto, etc.
Rubbing is a powder-like pigment that is applied to a nail that has been previously coated with gel polish. When choosing powder, it is important to give preference to a shade of gel polish that will match it. For example, it is better to apply red powder on the same base, but black powder looks equally good on white, gray, and black gel polish
Gold rubbing is also considered universal and allows you to turn any chosen shade into metallic and shiny.
White manicure with rubbing
White nails with rubbing are a hit of past years, which are still very popular today, and all because they look very festive and elegant. This design is suitable for both long and short nails.
Nail art masters usually apply pearl rub onto white shellac to achieve lightness and tenderness on the hands.
Red manicure with cat eye rub is this year's hit!
Of course, you can apply more than just cat eye rub onto the red base. Both metallic and holographic powder look good. But it is the “cat’s eye” pigment that is now considered the most trendy. Using a magnet, the nail art master “directs” the design and plays with color, and the client always gets a lot of pleasure watching the process.
Black manicure with rubbing
Many women over 30 years old are afraid of black manicure, but in vain, because this is not only a fashionable shade of gel polish, but also very practical. For example, it does not get dirty as quickly as white and goes with any clothes, unlike blue, purple or fuchsia. And any rubbing pigment looks perfect on black nails - metallic, holographic, cat's eye or chafer.
Black manicure with rubbing is often complemented with stickers in a minimalist style, which depict animals, tropical plants, geometry, logos, inscriptions and phrases, hearts and stars.
Ideas for blue manicure with rubbing
Blue nails are always a holiday. Such a manicure is impossible not to notice, especially if the color is not the usual simple one, but with a rub-in design. You can use different types of powder. For example, for spring or summer you should choose a holographic one, and in winter a cat's eye will look best, since the manicure has acquired a dark, noble shade.
French with rubbing - new
The idea of applying the rub to the tip of the nail, creating the effect of a French manicure, attracted the attention of owners of long nails, which became a real trend of this year.
Design with powder
Today it is fashionable to cover your nails not in one color, but to use different shades. The design can be made from monochrome shades of gel polish. Opposite, warm, cold. It is also important to apply powder rub only on a few nails. For example, most often they decorate the ring nail, little finger or middle finger.
Fashionable manicure with metallic rub
A spectacular manicure with chrome rubbing is often confused with mirror pigment. However, here the nails have a more matte silver surface, closer to metal. Manicure with chrome rubbing 2022-2023 with white varnish and a marble effect design looks harmonious.
Manicure options with chrome rubbing using the French technique and, of course, with glitter, also turn out stylish. A similar design with rubbing on short nails looks very elegant and not intrusive. It is better not to combine ego with a bright colored manicure.

Nail rub is a new design that is suitable for women of all ages: those over 50 and young 20-year-old girls. If you think this design looks too flashy, ask your nail technician to apply powder to one or two nails and paint the rest with a base shade. This will create a stylish multi-colored manicure, which is at the peak of popularity today.

Mirror rubbing technology
The best manicure option would be a mirror or chrome finish. To get an amazing result, nail experts advise following these recommendations:
- The very first thing to do is to put the nail plate in order (hygienic manicure). Namely, get rid of the cuticle, file it down and give it an aesthetic appearance, and polish the surface. The latter is the most important, since the result depends on how smooth the surface is. Using a special product (can be replaced with alcohol), remove fat from the surface of the nail plate.
- The second thing is to apply the base. It is done in one layer and dried for half a minute (if an ICE lamp) or two minutes (if an ultraviolet lamp). Then apply varnish of the chosen color. Dry like the base coat.
- The third stage is applying a top coat (without a sticky base). Dry like the previous layers. And then you can get down to the main thing. When using the applicator that comes with the rub, apply a little pollen over the entire nail. Rub the nail with massage movements. This procedure can also be done by hand. Moreover, in this way the result will be better than when applied with a brush and applicator. Make sure that there are no gaps left. If there is, add a little more powder. The pollen that has gone beyond the “working area” can be easily brushed off with a brush.
- And the last thing is consolidation. Cover with top base or finish in two layers and dry intensively. If you want a more saturated and shiny color, apply another layer of rubbing and coating to these layers.

How to use?
Before you get acquainted with the sequence of applying the rub to the nail plate, you need to take note of a few tips. If the purpose of the manicure is very bright, acidic and saturated colors, it is better to use a dark-colored coating as the base. Ideally, black. In this case, the color obtained after applying the powder will be deep. And, conversely, for gentle, calm tones, use light varnish (white), or do without it altogether. The top on which pollen is rubbed should not be sticky. Otherwise, your nails will become dull in color and lack shine.
The nail plate should be free of flaws, since the powder will be difficult to rub in and all the irregularities on the nail will be visible. It is also very important to monitor the drying time of the nail. It is impossible to rub powder into a dry surface. It should be applied as soon as the nails are removed from the lamp. The big advantage is that it can be applied in two layers (if there are certain unevennesses or to add more shine). But before re-coating, the nail needs to be coated again with a top coat without a sticky surface. On top you can apply a colorless coating with a glossy effect.
