Main causes of tarnishing

Before you whiten your toenails or fingernails, it's a good idea to familiarize yourself with the main causes of dullness. Because even if you manage to lighten the nail plates, the yellowness will return over time if the main cause of this phenomenon is not eliminated. The appearance of nails can deteriorate under the influence of such factors:

  • long-term wearing of any coating, regardless of density - regular varnish, gel polish, acrylic;
  • regular smoking;
  • lack of personal protective equipment when working with household chemicals;
  • development of mycosis, candidiasis or other fungal infections;
  • acute deficiency of vitamins and minerals;
  • excessive caffeine consumption;
  • frequent contact with coloring components, without the use of gloves.

The listed factors negatively affect the appearance of the nail plates. As a result, they become cloudy and begin to turn yellow. Knowing how to whiten your fingernails, you can restore the beauty of your hands.

Yellow nails: what to do?

An easy and pleasant procedure will strengthen your nails and whiten them

A visit to a nail salon and applying gel polish will mask the flaw, but will not get rid of it. Yellow nails are a signal. It is sent by the body, reporting that not everything is okay with it.

Before you begin cosmetic manipulations, it is necessary to rule out internal problems. To do this, it is best to consult a therapist or dermatologist.

The doctor will prescribe an examination and give directions for tests. After the cause has been eliminated, you can begin whitening with cosmetics or improvised means. If the yellow tint is caused not by a disease, but by other factors, then an integrated approach will help correct the situation:

  1. balanced diet,
  2. replenishment of vitamin and mineral deficiencies,
  3. maintaining personal hygiene,
  4. proper hand care,
  5. health procedures.

If nail polish turns yellow, what should you do?

Low-quality cosmetics, cheap or too bright composition with aggressive pigments - all this penetrates into the tissues and changes their natural structure.

You can remove the yellow tint and restore its original beauty using simple means. They can be found in any kitchen: lemon, soda, salt or fresh fruit. Even frozen berries or herbal tea will work. Baths and compresses are prepared from them. After the first use, results will be noticeable.

To prevent your nails from turning yellow, coat the surface with a base coat before applying polish to protect against harmful substances.

Soda

In order to restore smoothness, pink color, and a pleasant healthy shine to your nails, you don’t have to go to a nail salon. An alternative to expensive salon procedures is home lightening. The easiest way is to whiten your nails with soda. Soda can be mixed with peroxide, freshly squeezed lemon juice, and toothpaste.

The most affordable lightening method:

  • Mix a teaspoon of baking soda with two drops of warm water;
  • the result should be a mushy mass;
  • apply the paste on the surface of the nail plates;
  • after 15 minutes, wash off.

Medicines and ointments from the pharmacy

Effective drugs for the treatment of various types of mycoses:

  1. Mikozan.
  2. Clotrimazole.
  3. Iodinol.
  4. Terbinafine et al.

The first of the products is available in a tube; the kit includes disposable nail files. This is an expensive medicine (RUB 875-1,450). Ingredients: water, rye enzyme filtrate, pentylene glycol, dimethyl isosorbide, hydroxyethylcellulose. Recommended duration of use is 1 month.

Clotrimazole is the most common drug. However, it is used frequently, which is the reason for the development of resistance in some pathogenic particles. As a result, its effectiveness decreases. The cream costs 150-185 rubles. Contains the active ingredient of the same name (clotrimazole).

Iodinol is available in a bottle and costs 50 rubles. Despite the low price, this drug is one of the most effective. It contains iodine, and this product is characterized by antimicrobial and antifungal properties.

Terbinafine is a drug of the latest generation. It can be purchased in the form of ointment, cream and tablets; the average price is 180-215 rubles. The active component is terbinafine hydrochloride. The drug is used in the fight against yeast fungi and dermatophytes.

Lemon juice

Quickly whiten your nails with lemon. To do this, cut the fruit into two parts and squeeze out the juice. Soak cotton pads in fresh juice, then rub the juice into each pad. You can place the discs separately on each finger and wrap them with cling film on top. After 15 minutes, remove the compress.

After using this product, you must apply a moisturizing or nourishing cream to your hands. Lemon should not be used if there are small wounds or scratches.

Drug treatment

Drugs are prescribed taking into account the cause of the pathological condition. The effectiveness of treatment depends on how correctly the diagnosis was made.

If the cause is nail fungus

To treat an infectious disease, drugs are prescribed in different forms: for external and oral use. The remedies of the second group help eliminate the cause of the pathological condition, since the fungus often spreads throughout the body. It is additionally important to treat the affected tissue areas with ointment and cream. There is also an antifungal patch, but it is used in the initial stages.

If the cause is common diseases

In this case, a number of drugs are prescribed, depending on the type of pathology. The choice of medications is made taking into account the stage of the disease and contraindications. In most cases, when nails turn yellow due to problems with internal organs, oral medications are prescribed.

Toothpaste

Whiten your nails after polishing with toothpaste. Rub a small amount of paste into the surface of the nail plates with an old toothbrush and use circular cleansing movements. After 15 minutes, rinse off any remaining product. Lubricate your hands with nourishing cream. After the first use, results are noticeable.

You can mix the paste with baking soda in equal parts. Rub into the surface of the nails. Leave for a few minutes, but no more than ten minutes. Gently wipe with a damp cloth or simply wash your hands.

Proven remedies for whitening nails at home

In order to return your nails to a fresh color, you do not need expensive complex drugs. You can find everything you need in your kitchen or buy it at the pharmacy. But only if the reasons for the change in the color of the nail plates are external and are not related to health conditions.

We whiten our nails with scented soap.

Soap, as usual, tops the rating of products that bring cleanliness and freshness. If the darkening of your nails is due to the fact that you messed with the soil or vegetables, a soap bath will definitely help you.

Pour warm water into a small bowl, wash with a piece of soap (you can take any toilet or baby soap). To enhance the effect of soap, you can first add baking soda to the water at the rate of 1 teaspoon of soda per liter of warm water. Keep your hands in the bath for 10 minutes and rinse with water.

Important!

Soap negatively affects the skin barrier, so after a soap bath, do not forget to use hand cream.

Soap can also be used preventively. Before doing dirty work with the soil, such as pulling weeds, scrape your fingernails along the bar of soap so that the soap fills the space underneath. There will be nowhere for dirt to accumulate.

Advice!

I'll share a little trick. I sometimes specifically schedule hand washing after excavation work. It is enough to work for 10-15 minutes in a hot soapy solution, and any dirt will disappear, as if it never existed. However, you should not get carried away with this method, since aggressive detergents have a negative effect on the condition of both the skin and the nail plate. Be sure to rinse the detergent from your skin after washing and apply a nourishing cream.

Whiten your nails with baking soda.

I have seen recommendations to make soda baths to whiten nails. In my humble opinion, they work rather weakly without soap, although, of course, you can try them.

But we still need soda. The fact is that its particles work like a rather soft abrasive, that is, they purely mechanically scrub off dirt. To clean your nails, dip an old toothbrush in baking soda and give your nails a good scrub, both outside and under the nail. It is especially effective to treat your nails this way after a soap bath. The result will please you, but in order not to spoil your skin, use hand cream after the procedure.

Whiten nails with citric acid.

Citric acid is a fruit acid that is widely used in cosmetics as a whitening and exfoliating agent. Fortunately, you don’t have to buy expensive acidic products to effectively whiten your nails. It is enough to immerse your fingertips in half a lemon and hold for about 5 minutes. By the way, this procedure also strengthens them and also gives them a wonderful shine! And you can use this method quite often and regularly.

There is another way to take advantage of the whitening properties of citric acid when you don’t have fresh lemon on hand, and you are wondering how to quickly whiten your nails at home. Use citric acid powder. It is sold in confectionery and grocery departments, costs pennies and can be stored for an unlimited amount of time. To whiten your nails, dilute it with a little water and scrub your nails with the solution using an old toothbrush. Leave on for 5 minutes and rinse off.

Important!

Before applying lemon juice or citric acid to your nails, make sure that there is not the slightest wound on your skin. Otherwise it will hurt so much that dirty nails will seem like nonsense to you.

Lemon juice, by the way, is one of my favorite remedies. Once I even managed to wipe off my nails stained with hair dye. Anyone who has tried it knows how difficult it is. And if you, like me, cook your family's meals every day, you'll love that it removes onion, garlic, and fish odors from your skin. And don't forget about hand cream!

Whiten your nails with apple cider vinegar.

Vinegar is an organic acid in the same way as citric acid. However, acetic acid is weaker. To whiten brown spots on skin and nails caused by peeling vegetables, mushrooms and berries, use six percent apple cider vinegar. It is safe and even beneficial for the skin.

By the way!

If you've been fiddling with cutting beets, treat your hands with vinegar right away; fortunately, every kitchen has it. Just don’t wash your hands with soap: this will make the blueness more pronounced.

Dip your fingertips into vinegar, scrub a little with a brush, let the product work for 5 minutes and rinse. Can be repeated if necessary.

Whiten your nails with sea salt.

Sea salt contains a large amount of minerals that strengthen the nail plate, so baths with it are a proven means of strengthening nails. But few people know that these baths can also whiten nails.

Interesting!

What is so unique about sea salt? Unlike ordinary table salt that we use in the kitchen, sea salt contains not only sodium chloride, but also magnesium and iodine compounds, which are extremely beneficial not only for nails, but also for the entire body. Magnesium ions can be absorbed by the skin, which is why general baths and local baths with magnesium salts replenish the deficiency of this mineral in the body, which, by the way, almost every woman has. Magnesium means a strong nervous system, strong bones and nails, good sleep and the absence of cramps, so it is better to take a bath with sea salt before bed.

Dissolve 1 tablespoon of sea salt in a liter of warm water and immerse your hands in the mini-sea for 15 minutes. This procedure will not only whiten and strengthen your nails, but also relieve tension and pain in the joints, and improve sleep. And it is very useful for the skin.

By the way!

Instead of sea salt, you can use pharmaceutical magnesium sulfate (magnesia) in powder separately or in half with table salt.

Whiten your nails with regular salt.

Don't have sea salt on hand? No problem! You probably have table salt: you can use it to whiten your nails at home. For the bath, add 2-3 tablespoons of salt per liter of warm water and immerse your hands in the solution for 15 minutes. This bath is good for nails, strengthens them and does not harm the skin.

By the way!

Before pouring salt into the water, add 2-3 drops of essential oils and your bath will become aromatherapy. The best option for whitening nails is lemon essential oil, which gives your nails a bright shine.

Please note that there should be no wounds or scratches on your hands. After the bath, rinse your hands with water and apply the cream.

Advice!

Add a tablespoon of cream to the bath water. This will soften the skin of your hands.

If the stains persist, use salt as a scrub. Just choose fine table salt for this, not rock salt with large, uneven crystals.

Whiten your nails with chamomile decoction.

Chamomile, beloved by all beauties from time immemorial, turns out to help lighten nails. Brew dried flowers with boiling water at the rate of 1 tablespoon of raw material per half liter of water, let it brew for half an hour (it’s convenient to do this in a thermos) and dilute with water in half. The bath solution is ready.

Baths with chamomile do not damage the skin at all; on the contrary, they make it softer and gently lighten the nails. But this remedy requires regular long-term use.

Whiten nails with essential oils.

The best oils for nail care are ylang-ylang and lemon oils. But the whitening properties are expressed only in the latter.

Before using essential oils to care for your nails, consider the following important points:

  • There are a lot of fake and low-quality essential oils on sale. Understand the issue, find out which brands you can trust.
  • Do not use essential oils in their pure form. This is a concentrated product. To apply to the body, you need to dilute it with oil, for example, olive, coconut, castor, jojoba, sweet almond oil. For 1 tablespoon of fatty oil, take 3-7 drops of essential oil.
  • Essential oils do not dissolve in water, so if you add them to the bath, first mix them with a spoon of honey or cream.
  • Essential oils are potential allergens. Before use, apply a drop of oil to your shoulder and wait 72 hours. If allergy symptoms do not appear, you can use it.

This is how serious it is! But essential oils are a serious thing; they are used to treat many diseases.

To care for your nails, mix lemon essential oil with fatty oil. I prefer coconut oil because it makes my nails shiny; Castor oil, which is sold in pharmacies, and jojoba also work well. If you are whitening your nails, you can make the concentration of essential oil stronger, for example, add not 3-7, but 15-25 drops of lemon oil to a tablespoon of base oil. The resulting mixture can be stored in a tightly closed glass bottle.

Advice!

At the pharmacy you can buy castor oil packaged in brown glass bottles of 25 or 30 ml (about 2 tablespoons). Such a bottle costs less than 50 rubles. Add lemon essential oil in the selected proportion, shake and store your potion in the same bottle at room temperature, but not in the sun.

To whiten and brighten your nails, apply the oil daily and rub it into the nail plate and cuticles. This product will both whiten and strengthen your nails, and it can also reduce brittleness.

In my opinion, products with natural oils are much more effective than completely silicone store-bought products, which only have a purely external effect, and they also save money.

Whiten nails with hydrogen peroxide.

Surely you have this product in your home medicine cabinet, but if not, get it and buy it fresh regularly, once every six months. Hydrogen peroxide is one of the best remedies for treating cuts and wounds. It also whitens any protein structures, which include nails. Rub hydrogen peroxide into the nail plate using a cotton pad. Then let it sit for a few minutes and rinse off.

Whiten nails with glycerin.

Glycerin itself does not whiten nails, but it is a very useful moisturizing component for the skin and nails. Then how can you use this useful component to whiten your nails? Try mixing it with hydrogen peroxide in a ratio of 1 to 5. You can apply this mixture for 3-5 minutes and then rinse with water.

Interesting!

Some time ago, real persecution began against glycerin. Magazines vied with each other to publish articles about how glycerin supposedly draws moisture from the skin, dries and dehydrates. But not a single scientific proof was ever provided. But what has been scientifically proven is that glycerin is necessary for our nails and skin. The main thing is to follow one simple rule, namely, do not use it in its pure form. It is important to use glycerin in the form of aqueous solutions, then it will not dry, but moisturize.

Whiten your nails with toothpaste.

A funny and paradoxical way to whiten your nails is with whitening toothpaste. Typically, such pastes contain components that are capable of dissolving various unwanted deposits on the teeth. You need to understand that the paste from the store does not whiten the enamel itself; lightening occurs due to deeper cleaning. Therefore, we can whiten our nails with toothpaste.

In addition to stain-dissolving ingredients, whitening toothpaste often contains mild abrasives. Therefore, to effectively whiten your nails, use a toothbrush to polish them. After cleaning your nails, rinse them with water.

Whiten your nails with a glass nail file.

Glass files have a very gentle abrasive surface, so some girls use them to cut away dirt and waves from the surface of the nail. What can I say? If you are not the lucky owner of thick and strong nails, it is better not to risk it. Glass files, although delicate, are surprisingly effective.

If you decide to clean your nails with a nail file, here are some tips:

  • do not use metal files;
  • don't overdo it, be careful;
  • After filing, treat your nails with a polishing buff.

Whiten your nails with potatoes.

Finely grated potatoes are an ancient skin whitening remedy. Some girls manage to use it to whiten the nail plate.

Making a potato “mask” for your nails is very simple:

  • Wash the raw potatoes thoroughly with a brush;
  • peel it;
  • grate on a fine grater;
  • immerse the marigolds in the resulting slurry for 15–20 minutes;
  • Rinse off any remaining product with water and apply oil or nourishing hand cream.

You don’t have to bother with potatoes, but take regular potato starch and dilute it with lemon juice. In my opinion, such a mask is more effective and more convenient to apply, because it will not slide off the nails. Leave for the same quarter of an hour and wash off.

Whiten nails with cucumber and aloe.

Cucumber is an age-old remedy for any blemishes on the skin. Slices of fresh cucumber are placed on the eyes to lighten the circles around them, and freckles are whitened with cucumber pulp. Try whitening your nails with cucumber too!

All you need to do is peel the cucumber and grate it. Add moisturizing aloe pulp and, if desired, lemon juice to the pulp. Immerse your nails in the mixture for a quarter of an hour, and then rinse with water.

Advice!

Make more mixture and immerse your hands entirely. This mask moisturizes and whitens the skin well.

We whiten nails: with pencils, varnishes, gels.

It is quite possible to understand those who do not want to run around with a grater in their hands every night. There are special nail whitening products on sale, which can be produced in the form of varnish, gel, or pencil. If you like this option, feel free to use it. Some products only give an immediate external effect (for example, pencils that simply paint the nail white), others work honestly, but take longer.

Hydrogen peroxide

Hydrogen peroxide has a whitening effect. To lighten nails, hydrogen peroxide is often used in parallel with other substances.

You can mix peroxide with soda, proportions 1 to 2. The result will be a foaming paste-like mixture. When the foam stops coming out, apply it. After a few minutes, rinse with warm water.

Vitamin complexes for healthy nails

Often problems with plates on the arms or legs develop due to a lack of nutrients. For this reason, a course of therapy does not always provide the required result. If the signs of the disease go away, the nails become brittle and thin. Such consequences can be prevented if the patient periodically takes vitamins.

It is better to pay attention to those that contain different beneficial substances. It is important that the composition contains a sufficient amount of calcium, since this is the main building material in the formation of nails. Effective vitamin complexes:

  • Alphabet Cosmetics;
  • Revalid;
  • Perfect.

Such medications are taken regularly in a course, the duration of which should not exceed 1 month, since in this case the risk of developing an overdose of vitamins increases.

Vinegar

Often, after contact with beets, carrots, or berries, nails lose their original appearance and become red, purple or pink.

To remove the dye, make the following bath: take a glass of warm water, put a teaspoon of vinegar in it. Immerse your fingers in the bath for 10 minutes. Next, apply moisturizing gel.

Why do women's toenails turn yellow?

A yellow toenail in women may appear as a result of using low-quality nail coating products (varnishes). The chemical elements contained in the composition, penetrating deep into the keratin, can cause staining of the nails. The lack of a base coat can also affect the color of the plate. When applied, any varnish gives the plate a yellowish tint. The brighter the color, the stronger the staining will be, so you should apply a nail base coat before using any bright polish.

Diagnostics

Before starting any treatment, you must consult a doctor for diagnosis. In order to determine the cause of the appearance of a yellow nail on the big toe, a dermatologist needs to examine the yellowed plate under a specialized lamp and take biomaterial (a piece of a thick plate) for microscopic examination and identification of mycoses. After this, a scraping is taken from the skin around the diseased nail and blood is drawn to detect antibodies to leprosy and syphilis.

Salt

With the help of sea salt, your nails become healthy and beautiful. To restore natural shine and beauty, make such a bath;

  • a glass of hot water;
  • a tablespoon of sea salt.

Stir the salt until completely dissolved. Immerse your fingers in the bath for 15 minutes. After the procedure, lubricate your hands with cream.

Cost of nail whitening

All of the products we've reviewed are very affordable. We use many of them in everyday life and always have them on hand. What’s especially nice is that they are all completely inexpensive:

  • a kilogram pack of sea salt costs about 100 rubles, and table salt is 10 times cheaper;
  • lemons in the supermarket cost about 200 rubles per kilogram, but we need half a hundred gram lemon, which means we will spend 10 rubles on the whitening procedure;
  • castor oil in a pharmacy costs 30–50 rubles per bottle, which will last you for six months of daily use;
  • 10 ml of lemon oil will cost about 100 rubles, which is about 200 drops;
  • potatoes and cucumbers cost 30–100 rubles per kilogram;
  • vinegar, soda, starch are inexpensive and are usually found in any kitchen;
  • You can purchase a bottle of hydrogen peroxide from 5 rubles.

So, in addition to accessibility, all these tools are not expensive at all. But the cost of whitening varnish starts from 150 rubles.

Oil

Castor oil has long been used to make various procedures for strengthening nail plates, straightening, and healing minor damage. This product also promotes lightening.

Apply the oil to a cotton pad and rub into the stratum corneum for several minutes. Next, remove any remaining oil with a clean cotton pad.

If the yellowness is located under the nail plates

Considering that most fungal infections affect the stratum corneum, if the natural shade of the soft tissue (nail bed) changes, you should consider the likelihood of developing any of the pathological conditions:

  • jaundice is accompanied by yellowing of the entire outer covering and even the mucous membranes - the cause may be a disease of the liver, biliary tract, surrounding vessels;
  • lung disease, with a lack of oxygen in the tissues, resulting in yellowness under the nail;
  • kidney disease: swelling develops, pain appears in the lumbar region;
  • diabetes mellitus: the functioning of various systems and internal organs is disrupted, which leads to a general deterioration in the body’s condition;
  • weakening of thyroid function;
  • vascular pathologies, which contributes to impaired microcirculation in the tissues of the nail bed;
  • acromegaly is accompanied by intense nail growth.

Essential oils

These cosmetics must be used carefully, as they are usually quite concentrated and can provoke the development of an allergic reaction. They cannot be used by people who have an individual intolerance to a particular oil.

Squeeze the juice from the lemon, you will need no more than one tablespoon. Add two drops of jojoba oil, orange or peach oil to the juice. Soak a cotton pad in this mixture and apply to the nail plates. After five minutes, remove with a clean disc.

How to restore after varnish?

If you are faced with yellowness on your nails after removing decorative varnish, oils will help you quickly get rid of such imperfections. They will cope perfectly with this problem, since their properties allow you to quickly and effectively remove any pigment, even well-ingrained ones.

Any of the following oils will be suitable for the procedure:

  • olive;
  • sandalwood;
  • essential oils of lemon or bergamot.

The principle of use is simple: rub the oil well into the nail plate with a cotton pad several times a day. This procedure does not require further rinsing, and the oil will additionally help moisturize and soften the cuticle.

Use of pharmaceuticals

In addition to using unconventional methods, you can use commercial cosmetic products to lighten your nail plates at home. Effective are:

  1. Pencil or marker. Use it to paint over the free edge of the plate from the outside. Draw an even white stripe. After water procedures, the pencil is washed off.
  2. Gel. Release form: bottle with brush. In appearance and principle of use it resembles ordinary varnish. You need to apply it to the surface of the plates with a brush.

These products help restore beautiful whiteness to the tips of your nails within a short period of time.

What healthy nails should look like

To understand the condition of the nail plate, you should learn more about the signs of health in these tissue areas:

  • smooth and smooth surface of the nail;
  • pink tint, white color is characteristic only of the free edge and lunula (the area at the base of the nail);
  • there are no inclusions of a different color;
  • the plate is not thinned, but a decrease in its thickness may be normal if it has been like this since birth;
  • there is no curvature of the nail surface (no bumps).

The properties of the plates are determined genetically (thickness, shape, density). The cells that form the nail are called the matrix. However, under the influence of external and internal factors, the state of the plate changes. It often stops growing if the lunula is affected.

Other methods

To get rid of dirt under the tips of your nails after working in the garden or vegetable garden, you can use the following products:

  • crush an ascorbic acid tablet, mix with water, you should get a thick paste, apply it on top of the nail and under the free tip for a few minutes;
  • dissolve the soap in hot water and put your hands down, you can also scratch the laundry soap with your nails, this is a great way to whiten under your nails and get rid of dirt.

To prevent yellowing of marigolds, it is necessary to work in the garden, vegetable garden or kitchen only with household gloves.

To prevent them from becoming cloudy, it is recommended to stop smoking and make your diet more varied. Periodically remove shellac or regular polish, giving your nails a rest. Regularly take care of your body, take various baths, apply nourishing creams.

Yellow nails: prevention

The main rule is hygiene, maintaining immunity and general health. Avoiding yellowing is easier than treating it. Following these recommendations will help with this:

  • For manicure, use a sterile instrument. Carefully file the edge from the corners to the center to avoid delamination and the penetration of fungal infection.
  • Use only high-quality cosmetics; apply a protective agent as a base before coating.
  • After washing, dry your hands with a personal towel or paper napkins.
  • Adjust your diet. It must be balanced in proteins, fats, and carbohydrates. If there are no contraindications, include dishes from cereals, vegetables, fresh fruits, and vegetable oils in the menu. Don't forget about foods rich in B vitamins: meat, liver, whole grain bread.
  • When doing laundry, gardening, and cleaning your apartment, use rubber gloves.
  • Don't get carried away with polishing or extensions. Leave your nails in their natural state often.
  • Follow your doctor's recommendations during treatment, do not exceed the prescribed dosage of medications, and report any changes to your specialist.
  • Remove the decorative coating periodically and walk around without it for a while. Do not use too bright shades or protect the surface with a special base coat.

Beauty requires constant care and careful attention to your health. Your hands will always be in perfect condition. To do this, it is not at all necessary to visit a nail salon, just a little free time and desire. What do you do?
