How long does gel polish last, which one lasts better? Gel polishes require their own wearing rules. If they are followed, the coating will remain bright for at least 2 weeks, and the nails will be healthy and strong. I share my findings and personal experience!
I will not touch on the technological process of application, but I will go over the choice of salon and specialist. Hybrid gel polishes include CND Shellac, OI GelColor, EzFlow TruGel, Ibd Just Gel Polish and several other brands.
Most often, the reason is that the gel polish does not adhere well - a violation of the coating technology and thin nails. I have written several rules that affect the durability of the coating and the health of your nails!
Choosing the right salon!
1. The nail coating procedure consists of several stages, special products and a lamp. Look at the materials that the master uses - they all must be the same brand! It often happens that the varnishes are of one brand, the base coat is of another, and the lamp is generally from TaoBao. This coating will not last long!
2. Gel polishes must be fresh! The old ones thicken, are applied in a thick layer and form air cavities, which will lead to peeling of the varnish.
3. Before applying gel polish, you cannot do a wet manicure, the nail plate will give off moisture and quick peeling of the polish cannot be avoided.
4. The color coating must be applied in two or three thin layers, the procedure will take more time, and there will be fewer uneven spots. Remind the technician to coat the ends of the nails with a top transparent coating and “seal” the nails, this will prevent chipping and peeling.
Dependence of the durability of the varnish coating on the artist
The time that gel polish will stay on the nails largely depends on the professionalism of the artist and the quality of consumables.
There are three options for creating a manicure based on gel polish:
- In a beauty salon. This option is the most expensive, but the most reliable. Such establishments value their reputation, so real professionals usually work there.
- At the master's home. Not everyone can entrust the creation of a manicure to a person who works from home. The manicurist may be a novice and may not know all the technology for creating a manicure or use low-quality materials. But this risky option is much cheaper than visiting a salon.
- With my own hands. If you familiarize yourself with the technology of creating a manicure in advance, you can do it yourself. This will turn out to be much cheaper, because many consumables will only need to be purchased once.
Using high-quality gel polish
Regardless of the professionalism of the person doing the manicure, it is important to use quality materials. The gel polish itself, lamp, top and base must be manufactured by the same company. Otherwise, the manicure will not last long.
Strengthen your nails!
1. To prevent nails from deteriorating from wearing gel polish, I recommend taking a break for 1-3 weeks after 3-4 procedures. At this time, apply a clear varnish, use a nail strengthener, cuticle oil, lanolin and vitamin E.
2. On weak, thin and peeling nails, gel polish will not last long, so first we strengthen the nails and drink vitamins for nails , biotin and silicon are effective, as well as complete omega acids from fish oil and primrose oil.
You can buy my ready-made supplement protocols, take nutritional courses and join a closed club, whose members gain more knowledge on taking vitamins and dietary supplements.
How to determine the nail stress zone.
How long can you wear gel polish?
You already understand that on average it is advisable to wear a manicure for 2-3 weeks. But still people are different. How can you determine how long you can wear gel polish?
There is a simple test that gives a clear answer to this question.
- Remove the coating to leave your nails clean. Without any coverage at all.
- Press the free edge of the nail so that the part you pressed turns white
- The border between the pink and white parts of the nail will be the stress zone.
As a rule, the stress zone on clean nails is approximately in the middle of the nail, a little closer to the cuticle. Up to this very point you can wear the old coating and not update your manicure.
Every day the stress zone will move closer to the edge of the nail. As soon as it gets very close (in 2-3 weeks), you will have every chance of getting a crack, or even breaking your nail.
What happens if you wear gel polish for more than three weeks?
It all depends on your individual characteristics and the speed of nail growth. If your nails don't grow very quickly, then please. Can you wear gel polish for at least a month?
Vitamins for strengthening nails, dosage regimen
I made a regimen for taking vitamin complexes to strengthen my nails. The course of treatment is 2-3 months.
- Biotin Solgar Solgar, Biotin, 1000 mcg (drink 2 capsules per day) or
- Complex for hair and strengthening nails Country Life, Maxi-Hair, 90 Tablets (drink 2 tablets per day)
- Orthosilicic acid for nails and hair Natural Factors, BioSil, ch-OSA Advanced Collagen Generator (drink 2 capsules per day)
- Omega acids to restore nails are needed from Natural Factors, WomenSense, RxOmega-3, Women's Blend (drink 2 capsules per day)
That makes just three nail supplements that will also improve hair and skin: biotin, orthosilicic acid, and omega acids.
Review of the most durable gel polishes
Base and top - these two components perform an important function and to a large extent how long the coating will last depends on them. It is worth mentioning that the best option would be to choose the base and top coat from the same manufacturer as the gel polish. But even if the latter is not of the best brand, you can improve its quality by applying the foundation of an elite brand. So with an expensive varnish, if the base and fixative are of poor quality, it will lose its durability. The most durable gel polishes are:
Protect your nails after applying gel polish!
1. Do not expose the coating to alcohol, solvents or liquids containing acetone. Clean only with gloves, otherwise scratches will appear on the varnish and the shine will disappear. Metro sells packs of HORECA nitrile gloves; they are talc-free and do not tear. I recommend!
2. Be sure to treat your nails with cuticle cream daily. Ideally, such a cream contains lanolin!
It is rarely on sale, so here are excellent creams with lanolin for cuticles:
- Cream for hands, nails and dry skin Weleda Skin Food
- Lansinoh Pure Pharmaceutical Lanolin, HPA Lanolin
How long does gel polish last on artificial nails?
Not all girls know that gel polish can be applied to artificial nails. To do this, you do not need to use a buff or primer, since extended nails can be considered a good base. You should start working on your manicure by applying a base to get good adhesion. To make extended nails with gel polish look aesthetically pleasing, it should be applied in a thin layer and exclusively on an acrylic base. Otherwise, your nails will look unnaturally thick. According to reviews from girls, gel polish on artificial nails lasts as long as on natural nails, i.e. about 2 weeks.
High-quality nail coating
How long does gel polish last on nails? If it was applied by a professional using expensive and high-quality materials and following all the technology, then at least 14 days.
Wearing time and removal of gel polish
1. Gel polishes can last on the nails for all 4 weeks, but it is better to remove the coating after 2 weeks, since with longer wear the adhesion to the nail increases and it will take more time to remove the polish. Which accordingly spoils and dries out your nails.
2. Never peel off gel polish from your nails! The structure of the nail is disrupted due to strong adhesion to the coating, and pieces of varnish are torn off along with the top layer of the nail itself. Just soaking in special liquid and orange sticks.
3. When removing gel polish, place the nails in foil envelopes with nail polish remover for 10-15 minutes. I have met nail technicians who did not respect the soaking time and shortened it; as a result, the nails were severely damaged when the varnish was peeled off. If everything is followed, the gel polish can be removed without effort.

Problems caused by wearing gel polish longer than expected
Yes, it's not very beautiful, but it's not the worst thing. The main problem, as I already said, is the risk of breaking a nail. Another problem is detachments of overgrown nails at the base.
You've just had your coating done. At the base, this very coating is hidden under the cuticle, and everything is hermetically “packed.” After a week, the edge of the coating at the base of the nail begins to peek out from under the cuticle (the nail is growing). Further more. The base, which should have been under the cuticle, moves to the edge of the nail and begins to peel off a little in this place. Water, dirt, hair, and everything else begin to clog into this “gap.”
Personally, this is very inconvenient for me. For example, when I wash my hair or do my hair, the hair gets stuck in the areas of detachment at the base, and it’s just terrible. It becomes completely impossible to get yourself in order. Even untying a knot on a grocery bag becomes a problem.
- After 2-3 weeks, the quality of adhesion of the coating to the nail plate decreases, and air pockets and detachments may appear.
- Water, dirt, and any nasty things that get into places where the material is detached can cause the development of pathogenic microflora. The fungus, if you catch it somewhere, will feel great in such places.
Overgrown nails are not only not beautiful and not convenient, they are also a little more expensive. When I once again forget to make an appointment for a manicure on time, I consistently end up with 1-2 cracked nails. These cracks have to be repaired for an additional fee during the next manicure.
So it turns out that irregular visits to the master entail a whole series of problems and inconveniences for the owl?
The coating needs to be updated regularly
A couple of days after manicure and nail coloring, you should renew your top coat. This ensures not only the durability of the coating, but also its glossy shine.
It is important to ensure that the top is fresh and sufficiently liquid. If it thickens even a little, then the varnish, on the contrary, will peel off faster, since the overall layer will be too thick. In addition, the applied thick varnish does not look very aesthetically pleasing, since it is distributed unevenly over the surface.

What affects the shelf life of gel polish?
There are quite a lot of factors that determine how long the decorative coating on a girl’s manicure will last. If they coincide, the wear time of neat nails can be reduced by 2 times.
The factors mainly concern external influences on the fingertips:
- Use of low quality consumables and compounds by the master;
- Strong mechanical pressure on the fingertips, which leads to damage to the matrix;
- High humidity, visiting a sauna or swimming pool on the first day after visiting a nail technician;
- Using aggressive chemical compounds and solutions without wearing protective gloves;
- Insufficient drying of gel polish. Often, when the client is in a hurry, he tends to shorten the drying time of the pigment, and, instead of the required one and a half minutes, he holds his hands in the lamp for only a minute;
- Exposure of sensitive area to ultraviolet rays. Because of this, it is recommended to use sunscreen when on vacation or visiting a tanning salon.
However, premature removal of the gel is also often associated with problems with the health of a girl’s nails. If the natural plate has a fungal infection, thinning, numerous detachments or yellowness, it is not recommended to apply varnish. It is better to pay attention to restoring the condition of the matrix, increasing metabolism and local immunity.
If you find that the applied design gradually begins to fall off after a few days, you should immediately consult a specialist, as this may indicate serious pathologies.
Be sure to degrease the nail plate
When painting your nails, you need to remember that degreasing the nail plate significantly prolongs the durability of the varnish. To do this, you should use a special composition made on the basis of alcohol. If you don’t have the product on hand, you can apply your favorite perfume by spraying it on a cotton pad - it also contains alcohol. Simple table vinegar acts as a good degreasing agent.
After degreasing the nail plate, you should never touch it, otherwise the expected effect will not occur.
Nails should be degreased even if there was no varnish on them before.
Application Features
All products, including top and primer, must be applied in a very thin layer, being careful not to brush over the nail several times. In addition, be sure to paint the cut of the nail. This procedure must be performed for each layer, painting the entire surface with primer, base varnish and fixer.
Thorough drying of all applied layers is of great importance. You must strictly adhere to the time specified in the instructions for using the lamp. It is worth considering that the lower the lamp power, the longer it takes to dry the layers. This is a very important process. Violation of its technology is one of the main reasons why gel polish does not last long on nails.
Painted nails should be oiled
After the manicure has been done and a fresh coat has been applied, you should treat your nails with nourishing oil. Its components will not only nourish the cuticle, but will also help prolong the durability of the manicure.
It is worth noting that the main reason why nail polish comes off is when it comes into contact with water. The oil applied on top of everything prevents this interaction. By the way, to enhance the positive effect, it is recommended to lubricate your nails before each shower. It will probably seem to you that after just a few seconds of contact with water, the protecting product will be washed off, but that’s not the case - an invisible layer still remains.

Speaking about the dangers of water for a good manicure, it is worth noting that when doing housework, you should especially beware of contact of your hands with hot water - in this case, the varnish will begin to come off in entire layers. If such a need arises, be sure to wear gloves. To provide additional protection, coat the ends of your fingers with Vaseline or oil to prevent chipping.
Causes associated with disorders in the body
Each person is individual, and this also applies to the nail plate. Therefore, coating techniques can look completely different on nails. The reasons why gel polish peels off may be related to the following features:
- increased humidity of nails and hands;
- fragility and brittleness of nails;
- presence of irregularities;
- internal disorders of the body.
Some people have the problem of excessive moisture on their hands, so when applying the coating you need to use a powerful primer. Fragility of the nails can lead to a reduction in the wearing period of gel polish, as this increases the likelihood of chipping at the ends. The coating is applied very poorly to soft nails, so it is advisable to first strengthen the nail plate.
Irregularities on the surface are considered one of the reasons why gel polish does not stick to nails. This problem can be eliminated by first leveling the nail plate under the coating.
Some health problems can lead to gel polish peeling, in particular:
- hormonal disorders;
- diabetes;
- diseases of the nervous system;
- taking antibiotics;
- impaired immunity;
- previous operations.
All these risk factors must be taken into account if all other causes are excluded. It is important to know not only why gel polish peels off, but also how to fix this problem.
