Applying gel polish is one of the ways to grow your nails
Probably every woman at least once in her life has encountered the problem of brittle and peeling nails. And then some other important event is coming up, and you really want to show off a chic manicure, but it turns out to be impossible to grow your own nails. After all, we women, whether you are married or not, have to constantly do household chores, be it washing dishes, floors or hand washing.
All these synthetic products that we use to achieve cleanliness have a detrimental effect on our hands, and even more so on our nails, which eventually begin to peel, become brittle and very thin. To avoid this scenario, you should always use housekeeping gloves. However, they are not always at hand, so you have to neglect this advice, and then reproach yourself for it.
Just a few years ago, representatives of the fair sex did not burden themselves with the problem of treating and restoring their nails, but simply extended them using acrylic or gel. They didn’t think about how harmful this procedure is, and how difficult it is to later return a healthy look to their nails, how labor-intensive this process is, which can take a couple of months.
Recently, unnatural nails, and often even vulgar ones, have been replaced by natural ones, and not necessarily long ones. Therefore, nail industry specialists had no choice but to find an alternative solution, and this is how the idea of covering one’s own nail plate with gel polish was born.
How to remove gel polish correctly?
In order to avoid damage to the nail plate, it is necessary to remove this coating, following a certain technology. First you need to lubricate the cuticle with a special oil, then walk over the surface of the gel with a polishing file.
Then you need to apply cotton pads soaked in a special solvent to your nails, which is also used to remove extended nails. After this, wrap your fingers in foil and wait 15 minutes. Having done everything correctly, you can easily clean the gel from your own nails using a wooden stick.
However, despite numerous statements by experts about the harmlessness of such a manicure, you still shouldn’t get too carried away with it and at least once every 6 months you need to give your nails a rest for 4 weeks. It’s better if you take a short break between each subsequent gel polish application, so that later you don’t have to resort to drastic measures to restore the nail plate.
Pros of covering nails with gel polish
- Manicure can be preserved for up to four weeks, and you don’t have to worry about the polish peeling off from water or detergents.
- Gel polish is easy to apply and can have a wide variety of colors; in addition, it allows you to do both a single-color manicure and show your imagination in the form of unusual designs and patterns.
- It dries very quickly using a special lamp and does not emit toxic odors or cause allergic reactions.
- You can apply the gel in order to grow your nails to the desired length, because... it protects them from injury and damage.
- There is no need to file down the nail plate, as with acrylic or gel extensions.
- A fairly simple correction process.
Advantages and disadvantages of correction
Any type of procedure has its advantages and disadvantages. The choice is yours alone. If you decide that the coating is still strong enough and looks good, but the nails have already grown slightly, then you should only partially correct the empty space with gel polish. This procedure does not take much time and is suitable for people who are accustomed to value their time and money, since the cost will be much less than with a full correction.
But if you are not ready to wear one color for a long time, then it is easier to change it with a full correction. However, we should not forget that such a procedure is time-consuming and expensive.
Disadvantages of covering nails with gel polish
- This procedure in the salon is not cheap, so not every woman can afford to carry it out every 2 to 4 weeks.
- It is not recommended to remove the gel yourself at home, because... it requires compliance with a certain technology and the use of special means, and in the salon for such a procedure they will separately charge you a tidy sum.
- If your nails grow very quickly, then soon the area of plate growth near the cuticle will become visible, which looks very untidy.
- If you need to hide such imperfections of the nail plate as unevenness, then the gel will not help here, because... it performs the function of a regular nail polish and is not capable of modeling them.
Advantages and disadvantages of each procedure
Which type of correction to choose, of course, is up to you. However, it is important to know what pros and cons each procedure has:
- The undeniable advantage of a manicure without removing the coating is a significant time saving. This is especially important for young mothers and women with a busy work schedule. The cost of such a correction is lower. The downside is that the color remains the same, there is no variety.
- A complete replacement of the coating is good because each time you will go with a new current color, you will be able to change the shape of the free edge of the nail and try an unusual design. The disadvantages of this method include the duration of the procedure and the rather high cost.
Covering nails with gel polish at home
No matter how much manicurists say that gel polish is applied exclusively in salons and only by highly qualified specialists, many women do not agree with this. If they can paint their nails with regular varnish, then why not cover them with gel themselves, because the masters themselves claim that the technologies are similar. So why pay a lot of money every month if you can save money. However, you will immediately need to spend a substantial amount to purchase all the necessary tools.
To carry out the procedure at home you will need the following:
- A sanding file to polish your nail if necessary.
- A product for degreasing the surface of the nail, and you don’t have to buy something too expensive, you can simply use nail polish remover with acetone.
- 36 W ultraviolet lamp for drying gel, because... It will not dry on its own.
- A special base, which is applied before applying gel polish, bonds the two layers together and the natural nail.
- Gel polish of the desired shade.
- A fixative that performs a protective function and adds shine to the coating.
- Alcohol to remove the sticky layer remaining after applying the gel.
When applying gel polish yourself, you should also follow all the necessary steps correctly, otherwise it will peel off. The first thing you need to do is do a manicure and sand the nail plate a little, so as to only remove the glossy shine, but the main thing is not to overdo it and not make it thin. Then the nail is degreased with a special product using a napkin, it is better if it is lint-free.
Now the base is applied in a thin layer, which should be dried in a lamp for a couple of minutes (usually the exact drying time is indicated on the product packaging). We cover the nails with two thin layers of gel polish of the selected color, and each of them should also be dried in an ultraviolet lamp. Finally, apply the fixative, dry it and then remove the remaining sticky layer.
As you can see, there is nothing complicated here, but you need to be patient, because at home this procedure takes much longer than in the salon.

Is it possible to grow nails with gel polish?
It’s quite possible to grow your nails with gel polish! Thanks to shellac manicure, natural nails are protected from such risks (affecting their health and growth prospects) such as:
- the influence of harmful household chemicals;
- accidental mechanical injuries (chips and cracks from impacts on hard surfaces);
- lack of capillary breathing (typical when building with acrylic);
- Thanks to the durability of the coating, you won’t need to renew your manicure too often, which means exposing the nail plate to files or a Fraser, HDSL or degreasers (which dry out the nails).
With a properly performed manicure, the master builds the architecture of the nail so that the maximum load on the stress zone of the nail shifts to the center of the nail. Thus, during the process of nail growth, you do not risk the formation of cracks in the free edge area, forcing you to shorten the length to zero.
In addition, before applying a layer of gel polish, it is possible to apply special treatment bases that seal the delaminations and polymerize in a lamp. Such “smart bases” strengthen the nail, becoming one with it. And even after removing one manicure and before applying a new one, the natural nail will not peel off or become thinner. On the contrary, get stronger and grow more actively under the reliable protection of high-quality and safe gel polish. What affects the rate of nail growth
Growing nails is an impossible task for some, while for others it is a matter of patience and a short time. Scientists involved in dermatology have identified a number of factors that influence the growth rate of the nail plate, conditionally dividing them into two groups:
- Internal. Heredity, quality of nutrition, the presence of various diseases, lifestyle (no bad habits, good sleep, physical activity).
- External. Environmental factors, time of year (nails grow faster in summer, slower in winter), mechanical effects on nails that lead to fractures, working with chemicals that affect the strength of the plate.
Comment! Experts say: not only the above internal and external factors affect the growth rate of the nail plate. Nail experts believe that the quickest way to grow your nails is to take care of them properly: do a manicure on time, not forgetting about the medicinal coating.
